The support we provide includes advice relating to a specific problem, secondment of geotechnical specialists, and preparation of technical submissions to the Owner and his Engineer. Often, we are asked to train the contractor's local staff in geotechnical matters.
But, whatever our client needs, we concentrate on the practical approach. We know this is most likely to help him complete his contract on time and within budget.
Geological investigations and recommendations relating to tunnel supports on behalf of main contractor during construction of a 12 m wide, 13 km long headrace tunnel in sheared and folded phyllite. Rock conditions were exceptionally poor, even for the eastern Himalaya which is known for its steep, high mountains and difficult geological conditions for construction. Geological investigations and recommendations for minimizing the effects of rock bursts in a 6.5 m wide headrace tunnel driven through fresh quartzite in an area of high and steep mountains in the western Himalaya. Investigation and review of geological conditions on behalf of main contractor related to overbreak experienced while excavating a 6.2 km long, 4.8 m wide headrace tunnel. Tunnel forms part of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric project. Recommendations on methods of minimizing overbreak and assistance on preparation of claim for unforeseen geological conditions. Investigations related to excessive water inflow into two deep (200 m) shafts being excavated in gneiss rock to provide access to an underground LPG storage facility. Recommendations for additional investigations to predict geological conditions likely to be found as shafts were deepened. Work undertaken on behalf of main contractor. India. Samanalawewa Hydroelectric Project, Sri Lanka. Geotechnical investigations and advice connected with dewatering and rock stability during excavation of a 5.3km power tunnel and penstocks. (Balfour Beatty Construction International, London)
Paiton Thermal Power Station, Indonesia. Investigation, design, and construction supervision of a 2km long, 50m high rock slope along boundary of project. (Konsorsium Nusa Perkasa, Jakarta)
Singkarak Hydroelectric Project, West Sumatra. Tunnelling and geotechnical advice to main contractor for Value Engineering proposals, claims, and instrumentation. Project includes 20 km of tunnels including 9 km with TBM, and underground powerhouse. (Dumez/Impregilo/Istaka Karya Joint Operation)
Tulis Hydroelectric Project, Central Java. Tunnelling and geotechnical advice to main contractor. Preparation of value engineering proposals, claims, and Method Statements. Project included 2.8 km headrace tunnel, surface penstock, and Power House. (PT Pembangunan Perumahan, Jakarta)
